We slept through Switzerland in an empty compartment, the dramatic scenery blacked out in the darkness left for another day. It was exciting nevertheless, conjuring up the romance of the Orient Express without the lavish gourmet food and at a fraction of the cost - the Orient Express in effect on a bag of crisps.
Arriving at the magnificent Milan central station at dawn I was shaken from my drowsiness and for a millisecond was confronted by Irma Kleb standing over me with a long handled brush and sponge - Oh no! was I about to get the wash and brush up?....

Love the writing style Steve, Bill Brysonish, Rick Steinish... I can almost hear the lyricism in the narrative.

What a compliment - I must have picked up their style - they’ve published enough books which must have sunk into my sub-conscious.

I only hope Irma isn't related to Rosa, complete with poison-tipped knife on the end of her shoe!

Great series so far, Steve. It's wonderfully written and makes the reader feel like they're a travelling companion on this journey.
