I’ve been stuck on 99 for 3 overs out in the middle. So close but so far. Concentrate, don’t blow it now. I can sense my mates in the pavilion behind urging me on. The crowd is on tenterhooks. The pressure is immense.
The 6’ 6” Aussie thundering towards me is seeking blood. Whizzing red bullets fizz past my ears. It’s definitely personal. I’ve missed but survived 5 balls - on the 6th a snick to square leg and it’s a single!
The crowd rises, the roar surges towards the crease. What elation! Against all preconceptions I’ve passed the magic mark.

Brilliant Steve! What a stylish innings. There are no boundaries now. Keep on tonking those Aussies out of the ground. Keep on running, but remember, the more fours and sixes you hit, the less you actually have to run. Over and not out!

Cricket must be the most fertile sport for analogies and word play.... the bowler’s Holding, the batsman’s Willey so to speak!
