One hears much about the ‘Spitfire women’ of the ATA that delivered aircraft from factories to frontline bases in WW2 - less about the men.
It was risky flying unproven aircraft in all weather conditions, often solo with minimal navigational aids other than a paper map. Many pilots were lost; not to the Luftwaffe but to accidents and mechanical failures.
In compensation was the thrill of being entrusted the latest marque and control of the fastest thing on Earth - think collecting a Ferrari straight out of Maranello.
A vanishing breed, they should be remembered, the men as well as the women.
