Been asked to look after a hamster? As someone who doesnā€™t like rodents roaming the house Iā€™m facing that predicament for a week. Why am I so terrified of such a small furry creature?
Opening the cage I pray it does not dart out and savage my finger like some cuddly Hannibal Lecter. Its teeth look as sharp as a piranhaā€™s.
As chief warden at the zoo Iā€™ll give it a cautious welcome. If food is the way to a hamsterā€™s heart Iā€™ll win it over with a cup cake or two. Perhaps weā€™ll become best of friends after all.

Let's hope so, but if not, they do have a habit of keeling over as you pick them up firmly by the neck.

Weā€™ve buried a few, guinea pigs too. Wooden crosses with names on will have rotted by now, but I learnt a few transferable skills along the way.
