Dunking Donuts 1966 🍩

Our generation has evaded the horrors of the battlefield. Brave professional soldiers make a personal choice whereas fear’s been removed for others.
With nowhere to sleep, a night in a barracks of GI’s whilst hitching through Germany, still haunts me.
The contrast between freshfaced recruits from the USA, and those traumatised by a tour in Vietnam, was palpable - carefree spirits versus private nightmares.
Turfed out at dawn we hitched a ride in a Jeep to Wurzburg with a cheerful black chef.
What a difference to the night before, sun rising, as we munched through a tray of donuts for breakfast.
