Dennis and the arrogant French sommelier had been fencing throughout the evening over their knowledge of wine. They were both awful wine snobs in their own way. We all know these insufferable types.
Rudely the other guests preferences were ignored as the sparing continued with Dennis rather surprisingly slightly ahead.
But the suave Frenchman, not to be outdone, delivered the coup de grâce with slick panache:
Dennis rather glibly had ordered a particularly fine early landed Hine Cognac 1983 and COKE! The waiter visibly flinched, his national pride provoked, and replied with the cutting retort ‘Would that be diet Sir?’

Dennis clearly had a slim chance of topping that.
