1966 was an epic. Beatles mania seized the world and the likes of the fabulous four had moved on from clubs and local cinemas to vast crowds in mega venues.
The music revolution had even reached remote Macedonia as young lads sang along to Beatles anthems strummed on Dennis’ travelling guitar. The hero of the World Cup, Bobby Charlton, though upstaged Lennon as boys chanted his name from the roadside as we trudged towards the frontier. The Greek evzone, on sentry duty in no man’s land, presented arms to the sound of Yellow Submarine as the scruffy hitchhikers trundled by.
