Vasco da Gama is famed for making the first sea crossing to India via the Cape over 500 years ago but less so for introducing the Indian takeaway.
It was late when they landed in Calicut, but the 'Star of India' was open. Nothing was familiar - they ate recklessly, mouths on fire and no pints of lager to soothe the pain. The water couldn't be trusted either.
Despite the discomfort they perversely enjoyed their meal. The return voyage to Lisbon became the first curry takeaway ever, and, along the way, the term 'poop' deck was also coined for unmentionable reasons.
