Nîmes baked under a merciless sun. The crowds crammed into the ancient Roman arena for the corrida. The atmosphere was colourful but intense.
The assassin surveying the scene had already found his perch high above the President's box.
Preliminaries over, the first bull bounded into the ring to massive cheers.
The toréros played the brave bull skillfully, building up to the suerte de matar when, with a clean estocada, the matador dispensed the animal with his sword to a standing ovation.
Unnoticed, the President slumped forward with a growing red stain, like the bull, on the back of his head.
