Rodin, the famous French sculptor, created the harrowing statue of the 6 Burghers of Calais who surrendered the city to Edward III of England in 1347 after a year long siege.
The Burghers were ordered to leave the gates with ropes around their necks ready for execution.
Calais is not normally associated with the arts, more with the booze cruise or the "Jungle" migrant camp.
And sacre bleu in our quest to see the Rodin, that's not all; when we asked the way, admittedly in poor French, we received blank looks, or were directed to the local MacDonald's. Quelle horreur!
