Parking in the town was restricted but John remembered that there was a car park on the roof of the store. He was pleased to find a space and was even happier to see that the first hour was free.

He dashed onto the lift, rushed to the decorating aisle, grabbed a tin of white paint and ran to the checkout where he told the girl he needed to get back for the free parking.

“Have you got your ticket?” she asked.
“Ticket? It’s free.”
“You still need a ticket. It’s run by the council now. Have a nice day.”
