Even as a ten year old nobody told Pauline what to do. Not even the bully boys. She stood her corner and yelled profanities until her tormentor gave in. She would dust herself down and carry on as though nothing had happened.

As a checkout operator she was peerless. She had a trouble free life on Till 1 as the shoppers passed her by, filling their trolleys before going to the other tills.

When anyone questioned their bill Pauline sent them off to Customer Services telling them, rather forcibly, that it was the till’s fault not hers. Politely, of course.

Wow! I wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of Pauline! She would make mincemeat of a polite bloke like me!

I agree with Neville! Pauline seems quietly scary... ;-)

I used this Drabble as a comment on a Times article about Freedom Day in the supermarkets and a reader top trumped it with her own true Pauline supermarket story.
