The ruined house had belonged to Old John, the village blacksmith. It had deteriorated and was in a state of disrepair. It was an eyesore and a danger. With the Chairman’s casting vote the Parish Council voted to have the house and smithy demolished.

The Historical Society organised a spirited protest. Although there was little call for a blacksmith, demolition of the buildings would leave a big hole in the village’s heritage.

Suggestion from the schoolchildren that the memory should be preserved received so much support that the buildings were completely renovated. The Chairman of the Council cut the tape.

    Glad it's still standing. ;-)

Joyous! A hammer blow struck for preservation by those who will benefit in the future. I echo Jamie’s words (hope it is a true story🤞)
