Football is an international language uniting cultures. The game speaks for itself. The ball has no enemies.

When we were young we played with our friends. There were no markings, no goalposts - we used our coats. There were no kits. We knew the colours of the teams and we pretended that our tattered shirts matched.

We became aware that the national and international games were different from our. There were different styles ranging from British long ball to the progressive continental short passing game.

I was impressed until I heard the frustrated Spanish coach scream: “ Give it some wellie.”
