They thought she was a witch, but of course she wasn't. She'd come out waving her staff at the local scallywags as they ran away laughing, after throwing stones at her shack in the woods. Until one day she didn't. Found dead, slumped again the door, staff underneath her. Her failing heart was blamed for her passing but the children couldn't help wondering if their taunting was to blame.

One said scallywag regretted horribly his childish games as his mother shivered with black fever in her bed, awaiting the closest medicine women, three towns over. Awaiting, and waiting, and waiting!

    That first line sets it up so well! "But of course..." Then the mother with black fever
    is such proof in the scallywag's mind. Good one!
