Dorian #1

by

Chris had read Dorian Gray many times. Four, at least, when he was a teenager; twice again last year, when lockdown began.
Knew it inside out, did Chris. Much like he knew the portrait of the evil old git on the study wall. Satan, Chris called him, though for Chris the name was an affectionate nickname. He had no idea who the subject was, though there was an unmistakable family resemblance. It had been in the house for as long as Chris could remember, probably much longer, and though it was hideously grotesque, it wasn’t frightening. Not to him, anyway.

Before I start reading this series I must Google a synopsis of Wilde's Dorian Gray work because I’m a bit of an illiterate...

Thanks Neville. Yes, you must read Picture Of Dorian Gray, it's one of the all time classic horror stories - and a great study of man's fall into depravity.

There are a couple of films worth watching, too - Dorian Gray, not so long ago, and an old black and white film which is a little sanitised, but captures the essence of the story.
Tbh anything by Oscar Wilde is worth watching/reading.

Can’t think why I haven’t read it before as I’m a great lover of Wilde’s work. Interestingly too, I’ve written a few short stories (and maybe even the odd drabble) about kind of sentient paintings and I’m fascinated by concepts in the area of art. Must dust off my ‘Complete Works...’ and read soon. Thanks for the prompt Drew.

My pleasure, Neville. If you still have some of those short stories hanging around, could you drabble-ise them? I'm sure they'd be worth a read.

One’s quite long for a short story, but it’ll give me something to do while the TV’s so crap! Btw, did you get to watch any of those movies over Christmas? E.g. When Brendan Met Trudy... (inc the penis song).

No, afraid I didn't. They're still on my ToWatch list though :)

I've never read it either, but I know the story. It's one of those things on your "to read" list that always slips through the cracks.

I'm trying to catch up on what everyone posted during my absence.
