Crying Into A Mirror #6

by

“Never cry into a mirror,” Her eyes fixed on the glistening eyes of her reflection, Julie heard herself whispering her mother’s words.
Then, unbidden, words filled her mind, comforting words in a voice Julie knew well, words softly reassuring as if spoken quietly by someone very near:
“Don’t be afraid, Julie. Only I see you.”
Julie’s throat tightened, strangling a sob, and her hands wiped tears from her cheeks. Amid a loneliness of loss she hadn’t let herself feel for almost thirty years, her reflection, blurred by tears, became clearer and she watched as it force a gentle, comforting smile.

This is in one sense a bit ghoulish, but it’s so lovely as well. You have brilliantly drawn out so much from Julie, her feelings and imaginings. Work of the highest quality, Drew, as we have all come to expect!

Thanks Neville, much appreciated - it was a sort of challenge, to do something involving a ghost or spirit but to make it human and sympathetic rather than scary.

This is the kind of writing I wish I could achieve. Wonderful, Drew.
