After tending the estate's horses during the day many of Jayne’s evenings were spent in the enjoyment of her beautiful necklaces. Evenings spent alone often summoned up the memory of her mother, draping glittering necklaces about her small daughter's neck. It was Jayne's earliest memory and the only happy memory she had of her mother.
It wasn’t that her mother treated her harshly. Quite the opposite: her mother favoured her with the utmost care and love. But it was the only memory of her mother where her father was absent. In his looming presence, her mother was a different person.
