William, Earl of Northumberland, sought nothing but thrills and pleasure. Over his twenty six years he had become bored with city and country life. Thus it was to William that the genesis of their thrilling future lives was owed. He it was, when Jayne had confessed her yearning for necklaces, who commented with amusement:
“The solution, I believe, is that we three must become thieves! And if our paths to pleasure, excitement and wealth are the same path, then we are duty bound to follow it.”
His words met with silence, not argument or derision. Lucy spoke slowly:
“Highway vagabonds?”
