The monitors showed nothing: recognised constellations, nebulae and dust clouds had simply disappeared as the vessel moved beyond lightspeed. Teimo looked at his mechanical watch. The face appeared blurred, but the second hand still jittered around the dial.
He checked his hands. He'd been told they probably wouldn't grow younger and they were right, they looked exactly the same. His body functions had ceased though. No, of course they hadn't, the equipment had ceased monitoring. That wasn't wholly unexpected.
The real surprise was when his vessel itself disappeared.
Or appeared to.
He felt for his chair.
Nothing at all.
