The doctor shook his head when I was born.
"I'm sorry," he said, handing me to my mother. Dada turned away, as if he'd just seen something wonderful happen outside the thick glass window pane. Something wonderful, but out of reach.
Mama had tears in her eyes, that's where her love swam. Swam strong, against the current. I heard the thudthudthud of her heart as I lay looking up at her. It was saying femalefemalefemale or girldgirlgirl or maybe just poorpoorpoor, I couldn't tell which.
Whatever, the doctor was right.
The cleaner came in then, and she mopped the floor.

I think I know what this is about and if so, then this is not a fiction... a sad fact for millions.
