Heat #23

by

There's something magical about trees. I don't mean the spirits you see inside them, the ones who's eyes you sometimes catch peering out with subdued violence through knots in the wood, or who's myriad legs are easily mistaken for windblown twigs high up amongst thicker branches.
No, I mean the trees themselves; always watching, forever huddling together, whispering and planning. Perpetually conjuring shadows, playing with people, leading them on, misleading them on, waylaying them.
And worse.
And they waited now, their magics stilled and unspoken as we approached.
But stillness has never meant protection.
And unspoken has never meant unheard..

A walk through the woods won’t be the same now. I’ll have to proceed with peeled eyes from now on. Great stuff... love the last line... very philosophical.

(Btw, and unconnected, Lisa Williams sends you her regards. Still doing her MA part time and obviously still writing but focusing on sending stuff off for anthologies and competitions. She has promised to pop back to Drablr fairly soon to catch up. I think there might be an overwhelming amount of catching up to do by now! I had an idle half hour and wanted to find out if she was still publishing and discovered some drabbles outside Drablr. Hope she might give us a few drabbles as she's an excellent writer as you know. Crossing fingers.🤞)
