As the harrowing shriek slowly died , Rob's face relaxed. Wide-eyed spittle-fluked terror gave way to a half-smile of surprised recognition. I squeezed his arm reassuringly but he pulled away with a jerk, roughly pushing me away from him.
Soft tears brimmed his eyes. His smile widened.
Malkaz shuffled around the pentagram, eyeing him hungrily, tongues scraping noisily along its dried and torn lips, claws flexing in anticipation.
Rob's eyes lit up as silent tears rivered his cheeks. Then he fell to his knees, arms outstretched toward Malkaz, like a young child waiting to be picked up.
