Squatting opposite each other, cross-legged and intense, the two men rolled dice onto the hard ground.
“Your final throw Dezzo. Eight! Could be curtains for you, pal.”
Dezzo’s lined face became increasingly furrowed. Sweat dripped down his neck and his hands shook.
The other man’s hand felt for a revolver hidden in a bag close by. He didn’t pull it out, just fingered around the handle and trigger.
Dezzo took a shaky breath and let the dice fall.
He needed more than eight.
Three.
Then six.
He calculated, slowly. Relief closed his eyes. Blinded him to the deafening gunshot.

Thanks H. I had this image in my head of two men gambling in the Sonoran desert for some reason and when I started it, they were going to be characters out of the Cirkus. But it took a turn to the dark side and I ended up wanting to show the darker side of greed/gambling/self-protection in a landscape devoid of features, as if the two men and their bet were all that really existed.
