“We’ll always be together in my heart.” I joked, but I meant it; and she knew.
Her mouth smiled but her eyes lowered, shielding pain we both knew.

She pulled the duvet over us, drowning us in blackness: “I wish- ” I put my finger to her lips. We’d talked wishes before. Explored every wish, every possibility, every chance, fear, hope and dream. It changed nothing: she had no choice but to leave.

She held on to me tightly, like I was a rock, a harbour sanctuary, while storm tides flooded in.

And we both knew I had already drowned.
