Then, I welcomed the stillness. The cool, damp smell of earth and the blackness; the escape from the burning sky.

I needed rest. Down amongst the roots I spread myself and breathed in rock and dirt.

Ah, the roots! A sanctuary, a balm, the gentle protecting arms of countless mothers. Roots of trees, of mountains, of rivers.

Roots of skies.

Cradled within the eternal extinction I lay, dreamless and vast. Cavernous ages blindly passed.

And now, rested, I seek to throw off hushed serenity. I flicker and burst into fiery life.

And I return to gorge under frigid, obliterated skies.
