The chances of the worst case scenario occurring on this mission weren't astronomical; they weren't very low either.
Obviously.
So here he was, on an alien planet peering skyward, looking for Earth.
He had fuel and life support; what he didn't have was propulsion for the launch.
He didn't have it, that is, until he found the crashed alien craft.
With a little ingenuity, he'd managed to create a makeshift rocket; the question was: Would it work?
Without GPS, he'd pointed the launchpad at the tiny blue dot in the night sky.
He pressed the ignition, and closed his eyes.
