Who Was First?

“I’m telling you I was first!”

“No, it was me!”

The argument went on in this vein for more than five minutes with neither willing to budge from their position. With no witnesses to the event, there was no one else who could say who came first.

When it eventually became clear that they would not settle this argument with heated words, the two agreed that they would have to disagree and leave it at that.

“After all,” said the smaller of the two, “we’re both here now.”

The chicken clucked in agreement, conceding that the egg had a point.
