It had taken ten years to build. Ten years of blood, sweat and toil. Ten years of cutting blocks, climbing ladders and mixing mortar. Ten years of working in driving rain, freezing cold and blistering summer sun. Ten years of heaving and hauling.
“Worth every moment,” the king said, standing atop the battlements of his magnificent castle, puffing out his chest with pride.
Six trebuchets demolished the gatehouse and half the south facing wall the next day.
The king sighed. Ten sodding years and it was half-ruined in less than ten hours.
“Sometimes,” he grumbled, “life’s a bloody bitch.”
