My New Year's Resolution

My New Year’s resolution: eat more, cancel gym membership, wear unflattering clothes. Why? To stop men like Jeremy hitting on me; men who want to show me off to their mates, like some shiny new sports car. There have been lots of Jeremys.

That was last year’s resolution. I stuck to it.

In June, I married Shaun.

This year’s resolution: eat less, renew my gym membership, wear flattering clothes. Why? To keep my funny, caring, if rather chubby and unfit, husband company.

“Last indulgence before midnight,” Shaun says.

I nod.

He cuts a jellybean in half.

We laugh, clink glasses.
