The death of five-year-old Rebecca hit the small town hard.

“She was in the kiddie pool with our neighbor’s son, Stephen. He’s six years old and knows how to swim. I just left them for a few minutes,” a sobbing Becky’s mom told police, “to bring them lemonade.”

Walking on eggshells, the policewoman had a gentle talk with Stephen, the only witness to the accident.

“I was teaching Becky,” Stephen said.

“Ok, what happened after you were trying to teach her how to swim?"

“I wasn’t teaching her how to swim. I was teaching her how to drown.”
