It had been stored in a basement for six long years.
From September onwards, we kids gathered wood.
Householders living on the fringes of the field threw their old linoleum on the pile.
It grew and grew.
What was it all about?
November 5th, 1946 and darkness fell.
Neighbours gathered.
Men took charge and lit the huge bonfire.
Then it came - what -
A biscuit tin!
"Stand back" as the insignificant container placed on the wall, was lit.
Rockets, shooting stars, continuous fiery fountains - flaring and spewing out their explosive aerial displays, dazzling the night sky.

We gaped, gasped - open - mouthed!
