Conditioning... (Domestic abuse)
The first time he hit her, she understood. After all, she'd accused him of ogling teenage girls. Stupid cow!
The next day, he apologised.
The second time he hit her, she understood. After all, she'd become a fat cow, he said.
The next day, he brought KFC for dinner.
The third time he hit her, she understood. She'd overslept, forgetting his breakfast.
The next day, he acted as if she did not have a black eye and two missing teeth.
And so did she.
For the next twenty years.
Until she hanged herself in a feeble attempt at regaining dignity.

This is a really powerful and extremely effective drabble Frenchie. You’ve explained abusive control and conditioning brilliantly well in just 100 words. There is an almost Newtonian dynamic, action and reaction in equal measure, but one can see that the reaction (explanation to self) being the justification of the man’s action is the trap and becomes tragically self-fulfilling. How, I wonder, can any man do such things to someone he (presumably) purports to love?
The world sure is strange... or at least there are some strange folk inhabiting it!
