Hopping the World #33

by

I’ve never been in a helicopter before … much less sat in the front. But here we are, Agnes and I in the front with the pilot. Two Germans sit in the seats behind us.

Up and away, climbing rapidly.

A valley suddenly opens below us, falling away scarily.

Up again, the mountain is over 12000 feet high. We fly round the peak then down to the Fox Glacier.

Landing on the snow and out for a walk - we had been warned and had snow boots.

We offer the front seats to the Germans for the return flight.

They accept.

Yes, Verity, it was quite an experience! But as much as the peak, which we flew round a couple of times, it was the experience as a valley suddenly opened up below us. From flying low over ground to flying at 8000 or 9000 feet over an abyss

Exhilarating ride . As well as the height I might yet have nightmares about going out into the mountain snow in carpet slippers. ;-)

Thanks, Jamie, the snow was quite dense, so we only sank about 6 inches. For mr the scariest part was flying in this glass bubble, with a direct view down as we crossed valley after valley!

I can imagine the gut feel when the valley swallows you! Its quite an experience, Richard! Glad it was worth the thrill
