Hopping the world #24

by

I’m going to finish this series with my favourite place in all the world.

Paris.

Not the Eiffel Tower, not the Louvre, not Montmartre, not Notre Dame …

Place Saint Michel.

A magical place. The place where lovers meet. A place of peace.

Stand, face the fountain and relax.

Behind you the bustle of traffic, the Seine. To your right a little street with cute shops, over there the Eiffel Tower. To your left a profusion of restaurants … French cuisine … Greek cooking … even English restaurants. Ahead, the fountain.

Here is peace.

Forget your worries.

You are home.

Sounds terrific. My own favourite area in Paris is not so far away on Bvd St German des Prés, hanging out in Les Deux Magots, Café de Flore and Brasserie Lipp. Happy memories! And as for La Coupole, in Montparnasse... well fed, so trendy and an artistic delight. They let me have a copy of their menu, which I’ve framed and put on my study wall. It’s a work of art in its own right. Maybe I will feature it as my profile pic for a while.

I worked in France 3 - 5 days a week, for about 15 years in total, initially based in Bobigny and then in Argenteuil, although my remit covered the rest of France plus bits of Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands. But whenever in Paris, I would try to visit Place Saint Michel for the lack of bustle and the feeling of peace and happiness.

Possibly the subject for a series of Drabbles, particularly the bits in Switzerland and Milano, but I don’t think I have an audience other than you … presuming, as I do that ‘vote’ means ‘Read it’, so just one person reading. It would be a lot easier to write these things as a 10,000 word short story. Like Agnes driving at 140mph …

The series was fantastic. Thank you for sharing, Richard. We had the pleasure of virtually visiting them through your wonderful drabbles.
