Behind the Iron Curtain #9

by

"Richard Hunt? Used to live on Withington Road, Manchester?" One asked.

"Yes."

"The President here runs a very tight ship. We need ANY information we can get, to try to destabilise him. You can help with that."

"The girl that you met in the dollar bar works for the State, so do not tell her anything, but listen. And remember there are cameras everywhere. Anything you do WILL be on record."

"Tomorrow you will meet a lot of people. We need ANY information that you pick up from them."

"You leave the following morning. We shall debrief you before that."

I'm not sure why there is not a category 'True Story' ... which is what this is ... well so far. Richard

Answering your question, Frenchie, it would not be easy to avoid the cameras. Once I knew that they were there, I could see them everywhere ... except in the British Embassy. They were not the sophisticated ones that we have now, but still not easy to spot. This was the mid 1980's when Nicolae Ceausescu ruled the country by fear. There were at least three cameras in the dollar bar and two in my room. Most of the people were poor ... as we shall be finding out when we leave Bucharest
