Susie walks on to her allotment in her new yellow boots.

A stream runs underground under the allotments. It had been raining.

She sinks into the mire up to her thighs.

Shouts ‘Help, I cannot move.’

Others hear her, phone the emergency services.

The yellow helicopter takes of from Cambridge airport, comes, hovers above her.

Down comes a guy on a winch and puts a harness round her then helps her as the winch sucks her out - less boots.

“I’ve lost my nice yellow boots.”

“Whoever heard of yellow boots on an allotment, should have been brown,” her rescuer says.

    True story?

Minus the helicopter, then yes. The stream under the allotments derives from when the area was quite deeply flooded. The drainage of the fens (1660-ish) left us our fertile soil plus a number of underground waterways ... plus some Stone Age relics - one of which - a fish skinning knife - I have. More in the Million Metre Megathon ...
