Home has no beach so I must have been out for ages. More important than knowing why they've left me on a ledge barely wide enough in this vertical sea bird city, is how to get down. And down. (And Down.) Remembering, I slip, and scream, and spread my arms in panic, and fall fly, and fly fall, then fly fly, and fall fall, and at last, fly fly, fly fly, and the dizzying swing of the sea settles to a slip shiny flatness passing beneath my new, silent shock sharp, eyes, accidentally promising to bring the unguaranteed far shore.

I'm in a hell of a flap myself after reading this, Jamie. The hit and miss nature of learning to fly and free falling is scary...and the drabble touches a nerve with me on the day after rocker Tom Petty died ('Free Fallin'' and 'Learning to Fly' being two of his greatest hits). Spooky or intended Jamie?

Gosh Neville. Definitely no reference to poor Mr Petty intended! The only song of his I know that I know was him is I won't back down! :-)

It's a great drabble anyway, Jamie. It captures the seemingly hit and miss nature of fledgling flight brilliantly well. Given the news of the sad demise of one of my heroes though, for whom I had written an obituary drabble earlier in the day referencing those two songs, it did seem rather spooky. :-)

I agree with the others Jamie. Good drabble. A real sense of "Am I doing this right?" panic. I found the prose unusual. Fresh? :)
