Shelley hadn’t heard anything for years. They’d installed a chip that they’d turn on and off, which regulated the signal from her ear to her brain. But a long time ago, they’d turned it off.
She couldn’t even hear her heartbeat until just now.
It’s what woke her up.
The scratching that her limbs made as they moved against the wooden floor startled her.
Her cell was inexplicably left open. The entire building seemed abandoned.
Outside, her hospital gown billowed a bit in the desert heat, right before she heard herself scream.
