The world burned. Turning, unable to staunch the oncoming death, it rotated, incrementally towards its end. From the windows of the observation deck, Miller watched with glassy eyes and a tight throat.

Another planet succumbing to the rash of mass extinctions. The weather seizing and erupting instantaneously across the globe. Impossible. Against all known laws of science, but still it happened and continued to happen across the universe. He sensed her come up alongside him and he grimaced, straightening up.

“What good does it do to watch?”

“Keeps me reminded.”

“Of?”

“Our helplessness. Our ignorance.”

“We’ll stop it.”

Our hubris.
