I mean, why would they make such a concerted effort to get everyone involved in looking for it if there wasn't one?

Admittedly, I've never seen one down here, but it would be a logical place to find one. There are loads of dark corners where one could hide. I'm just surprised it hasn't been caught yet, what with all the requests for help they keep broadcasting. Maybe it needs its injections.
