I had one of those marble-colored, black-and-white composition notebooks for writing class, but I never used it after the first assignment.
I wrote "DE-" in front of COMPOSITION on the cover, thinking I was clever.
One day my cat's tail fell between the pages just as I was shutting it.
It decomposed instantly, falling off her body when she wagged it. But the rot spread.
I buried her and mourned, but wondered what else I could do with such a powerful weapon.
Until I realized I'd written about my parents for class on the opening pages
