Every worm was identical: a bright yellow wriggler freaked with black ringlets, bearing tumescent barbs the color of popcorn above their tiny mouths like beaks. These invertebrates -- all twitching in the broken chest cavity of a fallen parrot -- were extraordinary for their chameleon-like ability to mimic the host of their meal. An astounding mutation -- even for this accursed Island! Their heads even formed pupil-like circles above their beaks -- like the bird's eyes! I watched in horror as each little pupil gazed without purpose, their quincunxes puckering air. They made a wet whisper. No -- a voice...Shoot it! they cried.
